Update on Reviews

draculaart

Hello everyone 🙂

I realize I’ve been slacking with my reviews of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Dracula. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. comes on directly before Supernatural, and I always end up missing the last 3 minutes or so due to it cutting in (it ends at 9:01, and Supernatural starts at 9:00). Supernatural is the one fresh in my mind, so I end up writing about it first once I get to my computer. Dracula ends late at night, and I go to bed after watching it, and by the next day I’m busy doing other things, and I end up forgetting about the review.

This is still no excuse for my laziness, and I PROMISE to begin picking up the pace in these reviews.

Some of my thoughts on the last Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode: We FINALLY get screen time devoted to FitzSimmons! This episode was wonderful for them, as it showed us how much they care about one another. Their friendship is one of the highlights of the show, in my opinion. When Simmons jumped off the plane, and Fitz screamed after her, it really came out how much she means to him, and how connected they are. They are two halves of one whole, and if Simmons had died, Fitz would have lost a huge part of himself. I’m also glad that they’re showing Skye’s betrayal having repercussions. It’s not just brushed off by the next episode; she’s really going to have to gain their trust back, especially Warde’s (which is bad for me, considering I want them to become a couple).

I haven’t actually seen the Dracula episode yet, but hopefully I’ll be able to get a few thoughts up by Wednesday at the latest.

Thank you for reading!

Sleepy Hollow: Season 1, episode 7 – Review

This episode was quite good, I felt! As always, the moments between Abbie and Ichabod were the highlight of the episode for me. There is just something so unique, so wonderful about their relationship that makes me indescribably happy. Those times when Ichabod doesn’t understand a modern social norm, or tries to argue against purchasing water (that running gag throughout this episode made me laugh out loud), and Abbie just stares at him and smiles, sometimes laughing. Those moments are warm and happy and just plain joyful, and I look forward to them every week. This episode in particular had a very heartfelt scene with them, when one of them said, “All we really have is each other.” (Or something to that effect – I don’t have the exact quote with me.)

There were quite a number of “Ichabod messes stuff up” bits in this episode, but I’m very happy that they didn’t exploit them, or make them ridiculous and have him be the center of a joke. They were gentle and light-hearted, poking small fun at his old-fashioned ways. One of my favorites was the entire computer bit, from him getting frustrated at how to use the laptop’s keyboards, to conversing with the woman on the porn website. They were HILARIOUS, and I do hope they continue.

As for the plot, I think it was very exciting. I’m happy Frank was finally shown the truth, and glad that he seemed to take it as well as any normal person would – no extreme “But this can’t be possible!” outbursts, but instead frustrated sighs of “I wish this wasn’t happening.” I’m also pleased with the scene when Death shot the lab worker (his name escapes me). Frank thought quickly and on his feet, remembering to grab the skull and still make it out of there alive. Him working with Abbie and Ichabod at the end was great.

I’m still unsure of what to think of Brooks. I don’t believe he can be trusted, but he seems to be a gray character of sorts (being a messenger, or something like that). Whatever the case, I would not be so quick to accept his offer of protection.

In all, it was intense and funny and an incredibly well done episode, and I am very much looking forward to next week.

Dracula: Season 1, episode 1 – Review

Simply breathtaking. This first episode was exciting, yet informative and carefully guided to make sure the viewers understood everything, while also keeping it well-paced and action-packed.

The first scene was very well shot, and that transformation was amazing. The special effects crew deserves a round of applause for the seamless transition the rock hard corpse makes to Dracula (or Alexander Grayson, rather).

The whole scene with the illuminating light bulbs was great – the entire ballroom being awestruck, and seeing those men become unsettled was incredibly satisfying.

I’m also interested in seeing how Dracula’s plan – destroying the Order of the Dragon’s power through the use of modern science – plays out. Though of course Drac is the villain, you can’t help but feel sympathy for him as he recalls how the Order murdered his wife.

Speaking of his wife, we have Mina Murray, her reincarnation, who has an inexplicable attraction to and chemistry with Drac. This was the one part I disliked, as it is far too similar to Dark Shadows, among other cliches of villains finding the reincarnation of their true love. I would have much preferred if they had left out the “reborn” part, and just let the chemistry speak for itself. That said, I do hope they end up together (I find Jonathan just plain boring). I also look forward to seeing more of the Lucy character; she seems very likable.

Renfield was marvelous. I quite enjoyed his simple, deadpan way of speaking, and his unwavering faithfulness in Dracula. I hope we get to see more of how their dynamic works. What we saw of Van Helsing was also very intriguing.

In all, I’m very much anticipating the next episode, and this seems as if it will be a great (if very reimagined) series.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Season 1, episode 4 – Review

This was a super action-packed episode, right from the beginning! Akela was amazing (am I spelling that correctly?), though it was heartbreaking that she had to use her skills for theft. The scene where she plunged the needle into her own eye was nerve-wracking, and it made me super jittery and nervous. However, it was also slightly fascinating, simply because her character is so focused, so practiced, she probably didn’t even FEEL the pain. What a BAMF.

As always, the relationship between Skye and Agent Ward was cute and flirtatious, and I’m betting they’re going to kiss sometime in the mid-season finale. Their chemistry is adorable and they have the best witty, sarcastic dialogue.

Along with that, the father-daughter scenes between Skye and Coulson were some of the highlights of the episode. Their relationship is quickly and very visibly growing stronger, and I can tell he’s really starting to think of her as family. It’s wonderful and really heartwarming, and I hope we get more scenes like it.

One of the funnier moments of the episode was when Agent Ward was trying to “bromance” the guard (instead of seducing him – now THAT would have been even MORE hilarious). His general awkwardness was charming, even though it didn’t work on the cold security officer. I’m glad we’re starting to see more of his own doubts, which greatly contrasts with the practiced, level-headed man we usually get.

All in all, it was a really wonderful episode, complete with well-paced scenes and great characters. I’m looking forward to next week!
