Supernatural/Destiel

Twist and Shout (gabriel & standbyme) – Summary: What begins as a transforming love between Dean Winchester and Castiel Novak in the summer of 1965 quickly derails into something far more tumultuous when Dean is drafted in the Vietnam War. Though the two both voice their relationship is one where saying goodbye is never a real truth, their story becomes fraught with the tragedy of circumstance. In an era where homosexuality was especially vulnerable, Twist and Shout is the story of the love transcending time, returning over and over in its many forms, as faithful as the sea. My Review: You’ve probably heard of it. One of the saddest, yet greatest stories I have ever read. It will make you sob. It’s an AU that takes place from 1965 to 1981. Warning: Death.

Sam is Genius Everyone is Dumb (peroxidepest17) – Summary: Dean is doing stuff. Castiel is getting stuff done to him. It seems like the only one who understands what “stuff” actually means is Sam. Sometimes it’s hard being the smart one. My Review: This is my favorite Supernatural fanfiction of all time. It’s crack, but it’s so good and so funny and anytime I feel bad, I read it. Sam’s POV, takes place around season 5/6.

your faith walks on broken glass (aroseofmanyleaves) – Summary: “He liked Dean’s freckles. Sometimes, when he was tired, stressed, or even scared, he liked to count them. There was a familiarity with those freckles, one Castiel couldn’t really identify, but they were soothing. They were the only part of Dean that was consistently comforting.” The night before they try to destroy the Devil, Castiel tries to understand the broken man before him. My Review: A beautiful and very realistic fanfic that takes place during 5×10, Abandon All Hope. It’s got a bit of humor in it as well.

Four Months (Aki and Tenshi) – Summary: Four months after the angels fell. It had been four months of Cas kissing Dean in random, private moments. Of Dean letting him. Of neither speaking a word about it. Four months when Dean decided to speak up. “Is not kissing a way that humans show affection?” Cas asked. (Rated T for an instance of the F-Bomb) *if you want destiel kisses, this is your fic*. My Review: A short and sweet fanfic that’s all kisses. It’s fluffy and warm and you will like it very much.

Torn (misachan) – Summary: Dean sits vigil over Castiel and voices from his past are suddenly very, very loud. My Review: A very chilling fanfic that will leave you with goosebumps. Not for the fainthearted.

It’s All in the Details (Colleen) – Summary: When Dean goes to sell his soul at the crossroads to bring Sam back, someone else steps in to negotiate the deal. Cas did get a sign and it sent him off into the past to change things. AU from The Man Who Would be King and All Hell Breaks Loose. My Review: While it doesn’t have the best grammar and spelling of all time, the idea is so good that you just don’t care. I swear, it’s worth a read.

The Fourth Wall Series (entanglednow) – Summary: In which Sam does another sort of research, and Dean is amused. My Review: A very funny crack fic about Dean and Sam reading fanfiction on the internet. Very well done, and an extremely satisfying ending. Note: Sam/Lucifer appears in this story.

The Law of Conservation of Energy (peroxidepest17/peroxide-fic) – Summary: The law of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed from one state into another. And what is grace, if not energy? In order to win the war in Heaven, Castiel and the Winchesters embark on a cross-country quest to find the scattered shards of Gabriel’s grace in the hopes that its remaining power will be enough to defeat Raphael before he and Crowley can open the door to Purgatory. My Review: One of the best and most well-written stories I have ever read with absolutely exquisite character development and plot. My second favorite Supernatural fanfic.

I’m Just a Love Machine (peroxidepest17/peroxide-fic) – Summary: The Impala finally gets the chance to love Dean back. The problem is, Castiel seems to be in its way. My Review: One of the most hilarious fics out there. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll laugh again, and you’ll sigh in happiness.

Are You There, Dean Winchester? It’s Me…God (bunnymaccool) – Summary: Dean Winchester has grown used to God dicking around in his life the last couple years. But this crap? This takes the CAKE … or pie, rather. Now he’s been thrown a whole new curve-ball. The kind that has ended the Civil War in Heaven … but resulted in Raphael taking over, and hunting for Dean’s ass on a silver platter. Not to mention dealing with Balthazar acting like a self-righteous prick, Sam having some big damn epiphany on his big brother’s sexuality, and Cas eyeing him up like he’s the world’s juiciest cheeseburger. All that mixed with the chance to fix it all and set everything to rights … but only if Dean is willing to sacrifice himself. Again. Seriously, if he ever meets that bastard God he’s gonna- … oh hey, Chuck! What are you doing here? My Review: A really fantastic story that completely normalizes the idea of Chuck as God. Sam’s formula is hilarious, and when Dean realizes his love for Cas you’ll squeal like a 4 year old girl.

Where Your Love Begins (misachan) – Summary: There are much sharper weapons than knives. Dark!fic. My Review: This is honestly one of the most heart-wrenching stories I’ve ever read in my entire life. Dean gets captured by Alastair, and when Cas finds him, Dean ties him up on his rack. This can cause severe trauma and depression, so read at your own risk. You’ll probably want to keep some fluff at hand in case the torture becomes too much for you to handle.

Five Times Sam didn’t catch a clue (and the time they finally out and told him) (twfftw) – Summary: Sam has no idea Dean and Cas are in a relationship. Dean has no idea that Sam has no idea – has Sam not been paying attention? My Review: I always have a soft spot for Destiel fics told from Sams POV, and this one is no exception. Like Sam is Genius Everyone is Dumb, it tells how Dean and Cas are already in a relationship, yet Sam doesn’t know about it. A hilariously adorable read.

Faith and Deeds (teh-helenables) – Summary:  The Miltons own a haphazard produce store, and Mary Winchester is their most frequent customer. (Dean/Cas.) My Review: A beautiful AU in which Mary Winchester witnesses the budding romance between her grown son Dean and produce store owner Castiel. Extremely satisfying ending.

The Girlfriend Experience (rageprufrock) – Summary: While it’s not like Dean hasn’t had a couple of truly regrettable hit-and-runs in his sexual history, this is probably the saddest fucking thing that has ever happened to him. My Review: When I first started reading this fanfic, I was slightly taken aback. It starts with Cas experiencing his first “sexual” awakening, and Dean…helping him along. However, by the end of this story I swear you will be sobbing with joy and happiness. It’s a loving, endearing, tender, and just an all-around SWEET piece of literature; one of those works of fiction that just make you feel good. I do warn you, though, it has EXTREME smut in it. Like, the smuttiest smut to ever smut. But good smut. You’ll like it.

Hands, From Which All Things Are Built (MajorEnglishEsquire) – Summary: Castiel travels with the angel tablet and without the Winchesters. One day, Dean gets a text from some anonymous number (they speak in the language of need). A post-08.17 Goodbye, Stranger story. My Review: A wonderfully in-character story about a different version of what might have happened after the crypt scene in Goodbye, Stranger. The build-up throughout the fic is slow and steady enough that when everything comes out in the end, it seems perfectly natural.
